Foot pain has returned

Hi All - I'm new here. I had micro-discectomy and laminectomy L4-5 on May 6th. Pre-surgery I had had foot and ankle pain which had developed into foot drop. MRI showed stenosis and moderate herniation. Post surgery, I still had numbness in my foot and foot drop, but the pain was gone. I laid low for the first week - no bending, lifting, twisting, minimal sitting. I started walking on day 3, and have been doing 2 15-20 minute walks a day. This week (week 2) I returned to work, working half days and doing mostly desk work and light filing. I made sure to get up and walk around from time to time. Anyway, this morning I woke up with some sciatic pain and quite a bit of pain in my foot. I'm so worried that I may have re-herniated the disc. Has anyone else experienced sciatic nerve pain returning during week two?

  • It is very common to have a return of pain as you start to ramp up your activities. Unless you are lifting heavy things and doing things you are not supposed to do itis very unlikely that you have reherniated. This will likely be a common theme throughout your recovery, I know it was for me. Pretty much every time you do anything new or more strenuous it inflames that nerve. Obv if you think it is a problem or it gets bad give the nurse a call. Thats what they are there for.

When do you start PT? that is a big step & is very important to recovery. It sounds like you are on the right track. Congrats on returning to work so early. Remember, take it eay, take it slow, and listen to your body!
L5S1 REMOVED herniation. Years of pain & compression. Microdiscectomy complete!! Trying to be super smart & safe with recovery!
  • Thanks for your response. I spoke with the Doc's office, and they told me the same thing. I probably overdid it going to work this week. I'm taking the today and tomorrow off, because next week it is really important that I am at the office for projects that need to get done. I was told that the more I overdo, the more I prolong recovery. Hopefully laying low for 4 days will ensure that I can be better prepared to be there next week. I will try to take it slow and take breaks to walk when I do go in. I don't go for my post surgery follow up until 4 weeks after surgery. I have the appointment set up for June 4th. At that time, they will set up PT to begin.
