Chronic mid-back pain - nothing is helping!

Good day

I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out there!

I am a 21yr old fit & thin female. And for the past 6 months I have been experiencing extreme pain in my mid-back, mostly on the left hand side. When I was about 12 I had a whiplash injury on my neck while jumping trampoline (I was a gymnast for many years). Ever since this accident I have been experiencing mild on and off neck & back pain which has always been relieved by going to a chiropractor. More recently though, many chiropractor, physio, acupuncture and massage therapist visits haven't helped at all and the pain is constant! I have also tried to just rest it and do nothing. It also sometimes becomes a sharp pain in my chest (on my left breastbone) - which then hurts when I breath. Sometimes this pain is also accompanied by abdominal pain and nausea but am not 100% sure if this is related? I am quite worried, not only because it has been going on for so long, but because nothing is helping and I'm in pain!

I am quite fit as I am a Pilates instructor, so I make sure that I exercise, eat healthy and stretch daily. Please let me know if you have any suggestions - I am tired of spending money on doctors that are not helping me :(

  • You need to go to your GP and get referred for an MRI or Xray. I know these are expensive but it should show up any areas if your spine is damaged. If it is muscular, a myleogram would also show up any damage. I was extremely fit before my accident and a gym fanatic but PT made mine worse.

As a Pilates instructor you may be doing more damage to your spine, everyone twists all day so please take it easy, my pain never went away and I ended up on strong painkillers and had to eventually give up work. See if a soft brace helps. I sleep on a magnetic underlay which helps me.

You really need to check this out NOW. Please don't end up like me, in intractable pain. If you want to read my story is buried on this site under this thoracic pain is insane, under upper back pain. Hopefully you just have muscular damage, my pain is only on my right side which is the side that was damaged in my accident. I thought it would get better for years and kept working but IT DIDN'T so please have it checked out now.

If it effects your breathing it is serious so you need to take it seriously.
