Chronic pain, pain pump, Granuloma, and discitis

Hi! My name is Marla and i AM A disabled nurse who hurt my nack lifting and turning a 350 lb stroke patient. Plus many falls onn the ice and in 1990 I was diagnosed with spinal stenosis ands hip dysplasia, degenerative disc diseasse. I continued to work and saw a dr in 2000 who put in my Medtronic pain pump implant. The problem wa she put the Dilaudid at such high levels plus many po meds. She had her license revoked.
In 2005 we moved to Fort wayne, In and I felt great, took off 50 lbs, was swimming every day and my new pain dr lowered my pain pump and I had no pain pills by mouth. Then in 2008 I started falling down for 2 years;I mean I would be walking and just drop down and was too weak to get up. i SHOULD SAY THIS DR ALSO OVERDOSED me with my montly pain pump med. Hemissed the port and if I had not been a nurse I would of died. I told my husband to call him and he told us not to go to the ER(his reputation). I drank coffee all night long and in the am I started throwing up, went to the office and the nurse withdrew all the Dilaudid and then I was fine. 1 yr later he put in a new pup right in the middle of my granuloma which I then left himand went to Indiana Univ. Hospital.
After the Granuloma was repaired I did not fall down any more but for 1 yr could only make it from the bed to the chair and was also in ICU 5 dAYS. Now I have a excellent dr;just as we were getting ready to put the pump reconnected we did a MRI with and without contrast. They found a hernaited disc, 2 lumbars on top of each other and the worst thing they found out I have discitis. I have a infection in the disc, I had a lumbar biopsy, and will probably go on IV antibiotics for 1 yr. Some how spinal fluid got in the epidural space and tis is very abnormal. I am waiting fdor the reuylts of my biopsy-it takes 6-8 wks for the results. MYmeds are Fentnayl 75 mg every 3 days and it hardly works and also on Dilaudid 4 mg every 4-6 hrs and I am still in pain 24/7. I will be glad when I can get my pain relieved, get the pump hooked up again, and get this infection healed up. Thanks for listening. Marla

I never got as far as having my pain pump implanted, only the trial. Then the infection. Staph A. Discitis and osteomeylitis. Before we knew what type of infection there was ( could see it on the MRI and bone scan ) my doctor started me on vanco 3 times a day along with a antifungal. The infection had spread from l5-s1 to l3, and l4 within one month. When the biopsy came back the meds were changed to IV 24 hrs a day for 7 weeks. I am now considered a chronic spine infection patient because the antibiotics did not work. After the Iv antibiotics I was placed on oral and at the 7 month mark more test were done. I am still showing signs of infection but was told it is now contained to l5-s1. I was given a script for antibiotics for the next year and pray there are no flare ups. Per my infectious disease Dr I have a 25% chance of the infection spreading and getting worse. No one will do surgery at this point becauce there are no abcesses. I no longer feel so ill but everytime I have a fever or start feeling bad I freak out thinking here I go again
