road trip and cruise

Hi all! I hope this is finding everyone getting SOME relief! I am needing some advice from myfellow spineys. We are looking into a vacation that would include driving from Kansas to Florida and a cruise! I have taken SEVERAL cruises before, but those were all when my back wasn't as bad. I am not that concerned about the cruise as much as I am that long of a road trip! I can't go more then 2 hrs now without staying over if I am alone! Luckily I won't be alone, but still, pretty scary! Any tips anyone has found that helps? We will be bringing my rollator and maybe a wheel chair. Any tips would be awesome, thanks!

  • Have you ever been on a cruise with a wheel chair? I did this past Fall as I was still recovering from some spinal repairs. It was... AWESOME....lol. Everyone was sooo friendly (of course I was also sporting a leg brace and a hard spine brace, so I did look pretty banged up) and I always got to go to the front of the lines.... which was really great during check in. I thought I was going to be some what miserable, but I wasn't.

As far as the drive... you need to be certain to get out as much as possible, even factor in travel time allowing 15 minute breaks every 2 hours for sure. I'd also ask the doctor about medication while traveling.... I know you want to be careful not to be taking anything that might make blood clots more of a risk, but also the doc might recommend you taking different (or additional) pain meds to make the trip easier. You'll also want different size/shape pillows with you and be sure to pack where you still have plenty of room where you are sitting to use these pillows in different positions. I find traveling in those cheap silk PJ pants is great because you can "slide" around in the seat easier to get more comfortable. Of course, its best to wear the matching cheap silk PJ shirt as well.

Best of luck to you! I hope you have a great time!
