I had a three level fusion (L3-S1) on 10/03/12. I progressed well for a few months, then my recovery plateaued. After many visits to the neurosurgeon voicing my concern, he ordered a CT scan last month. Unfortunately, the CT scan revealed that all three levels failed to fuse. The neurosurgeon was shocked, he questioned if I smoked and didn't tell him. I have never smoked. The neurosurgeon said I could live with the pain, or he could do a revision surgery from the posterior.
Although that is a huge decision, that's not the end of my predicament. I had a c5-c7 fusion in 2009, and that pain returned 3 months ago. An MRI of my cervical spine revealed that I need fusion at c2-c5, with repairs to the c5-c7 fusion.
I truly am at a loss. I do not want to have any more cervical or lumbar surgeries, but the pain in both areas is unbearable. I'm an emotional mess, very crabby and irritable, and in intense pain. I'm looking for advice, suggestions, recommendations, and emotional support. I cannot help but wonder what my future will be. The surgeon said I probably won't ever be able to return to work, and at 38 the road ahead seems so long!
2007 and 2010 L4-S1 Microdiscectomies; helped for a total of 3 years between the 2 of them.
10/03/2012....back reconstruction L3-S1...large titanium "seperators" were put at each level with synthetic bone graft material.
