I'm new to the group. My name is Jessica. I'm facing a hard decision on whether to have back surgery or just deal with the pain. Up till a year ago I was a very active person. I have been an athlete since I was 5. About a year ago the doctor said I sprained a ligament in my back. I went to physical therapy and the pain did not get better. It started to get worse and go down to my hips and legs. I then tried the chiropractor, message therapy, shockwave therapy and trigger point. Nothing was working. My doctor referred me to a ortho doctor. They did an MRI and it showed I have a severe ruptured disc in my lower back. This doctor wanted to completely remove the disc and let scar tissue form. If the scar tissue didn't form then I would have to have it fused. I went for a second opinion and they said surgery also, but they only want to remove part of the disc that is against my nerve.
This is one of the hardest decisions I every had to make for my own health. Everyone I see or talk to that has had surgery for their back still has problems.
Has anyone had successful surgery where they removed just part of the disc?
Thanks for all your help in advance.
