How do I get my doctor to listen to me?

I was diagnosed with Sciatica in 2002 when my legs locked up one night while riding on a friends motorcycle. The doctor I saw at the time did injections, burned my nerve endings and put me on 10 mg Methadose 3X daily. I was going to college full time, working part time and had 3 children. The methadose made me very tired so I didn't take it as often as prescribed. About 3 1/2 years ago I was at work and was lifting cases of water from the cash register belt and I felt a pop or snap or something in my neck. After several x-rays and MRI's and meetings with 3 specialist I was diagnosed with herniated disc at C3-4, C4-5 and C5-6. After going through physical therapy, injections and several other treatments my doctor told me that I should have a fusion. This was a Work Comp issue at the time and after the fusion with a rod and 3 screws, I was sent back to work 8 days later. I was supposed to be on restrictions and not supposed to do anything, but that is impossible in a store at an electronic table right before Thanksgiving. I have been given Norco 10 mg 4X daily and parafon forte, I am also on MS Contin 15 mg 2X daily. After almost a year of complaining about severe pain in my neck both back and front and the Nurse Practitioner telling me that there was nothing wrong with me because there was nothing on the x-ray. I finally got them to do an MRI and they found that the disc above my fusion is herniated and I had a 2 1/2 mass on my thyroid which was quickly removed. The whole year that I asked for some kind of help for an MRI or something, all they said was "we don't want to put you on any other meds". I was on the Parafon Forte and Norco 10 mg 5X a day at the time. They added the MS Contin and cut the Norco and cut the muscle relaxers as well. I asked them if we could switch the Norcos to Percoset because I have been on them for a long time and they are not working as well anymore. I had told my other doctor that was treating my Sciatica that I wanted off the Methadose and he put me on Norco 10mg 6X a day and I have been taking it for about 7 or 8 years. My current pain management doctor said, "what do you think about going off the pain meds all together?" I told him that I have pain every day of my life and that taking me off them will make it so I won't be able to do anything. I also reminded him that I still have a herniated disc that has not healed. I have pain in my neck, arms, hands and lower back and legs from the sciatica. I also have numbness, tingling and loss of grip. My best days pain is about a 5 and goes to a 9 several times a week. I need help and don't know what to do. They don't listen to me

  • major problem is to suggest a narcotic to a doctor by telling them the others don't work. let the doctor suggest pain meds and go with what he suggests. this is one red flag for a pain doctor. never tell them meds aren't working and i need something stronger especially narcotics. you can say it does not work but leave out narcotics unless doctor suggest a change on his own
I have 4 fusions from L5-3, the latest last May '12 where they fixed my disc that broke. They went through my side this time. I take 40 mg of oxycontin 4x a day and 4 fenatyl lollipops 300 micro gms 4x a day.
