Thoracic spine burst fracture

This post is for my 78 year old mother. Three weeks ago she rolled over in bed and burst T9. She is on so much predisone it has destroyed her bones but the meds must be taken to keep her alive. Here is the issue. My mother has never been a complainer and could handle any amount of pain that comes her way. Not with this. After pleading with the Dr to give her something for pain he finally relented and gave her Percocet. This drug is not working. She is ungodly pain and we are currently waiting on the Dr to sign off on Hospice so they can take over her care. Any suggestions on how to make her more comfortable???? She is unable to walk due to this. We are trying heat and ice for now and giving her Percocet every 3 hrs. Giving her 2 at one time does not work because it affects her breathing too bad. She has emphysema and we have found instead pf 2 every 6 hrs, 1 every 3 hrs works better as far as breathing goes..The Drs say nothing can be done. Any suggestions fellow thoracic spine sufferers ?

  • I am so sorry. I can't imagine how much she must be hurting. I have both osteopenia and osteonecrosis from too much prednisone over the years, after asthma flares, bronchitis, pneumonia, so I can sympathize with what she is going through.....
What about some of those topical creams, biofreeze, icy hot, etc that might help to alleviate some of the muscular pain, at least a little bit.
There has to be something else that the doctor can give her for the pain , while not compromising her breathing further.
