No pain at the moment

Hi, I have been suffering with back and sciatic pain on and off for the past few years with symptoms changing every few months.Cause L5/S1 disc protrusion. I have been scheduled for a microdiscetomy on the 11Nov13. I have had over 5 facet joint and epidural injections over the past 12 months with different degrees of short term to long term relief. My last injection was 4 weeks ago with another great result. My concern is i am currently in no pain at all but my disc is still large and my surgeon still wants to operate. My symptoms before my last injection consisted of chronic right buttocks, hamstring and calf pain only when standing in one spot for long periods of time or kneeling. several months ago I could barely walk 100m before I had to sit down the pain was so intense. The pain was so bad I had to lay down and that still did not give me instant relief. I am confused as to what I should do. I feel as though at the moment I could run a marathon with no pain. However, I am schedule to have a microdisctomy in a month. I wish my pain was back because if it was I would feel more confident going into my surgery. Should I go into an operation feeling great even if its the cortisone is only providing a temp fix. Open to all suggestions and advice.

  • The problem with a large herniation is that it can go from large to massive and can endanger the area of the spine called the Cauda Equina in the lumbar area of the spine. If the disc were to fragment or tear, or get bigger, the risk of damage that could quickly become permanent if the disc was to get into contact with the spinal canal nerves . The pressure on the spinal canal nerves if they do become compressed has the best outcome if that pressure is released within 48 hours from onset, otherwise, the longer it is left, the more damage can occur.
Surgery isn't normally done to relieve pain , it is done when there is something that needs to be fixed can be, or if there is nerve compression.
I would discuss it with your surgeon again if you are still unsure and maybe visit another surgeon and see what they suggest , might help put your mind at ease .
  • I have just uploaded a MRI scan of my L5/S1 protrusion as my profile pic for your viewing and comments.
