Do I need book convalescence after a vertebrectomy

I'm booked in for a vertebrectomy with fusing 2 vertebrae and an implant on 25th November 2013 (about half-way up my spine) and my friends have offered to look after me for a few days when I leave hospital approximately 7 days after the operation.

However, I do not want to be a major burden on them and was wondering whether I need to book myself into a convalescence home initially (ie. will I be able to go to the toilet, dress myself and do basic stuff or will I be totally dependent on them for everything).

I've enquired with my surgeon's secretary and not yet had a response and I expect I will find out when I see him a week before my operation but I need to know now so I can arrange things if necessary.

Basically, I need to know what I will be capable of after the operation since I live alone and may need to book myself into a convalescence home for a few days or more. Any information would be gratefully received. Thanks

  • Hi
I do not normally comment on something like this but I have a friend that went the convalescent way and ended up with two infections that took months to get over and then there was also a employee issue that was not right so I would say if friends can help you at home that would be so much better. There is no place like home.

    Good Luck
