  • Hi Paula,
I had a fusion done on L4-L5 on October 1st after 2 failed microdiscectomies. I too was so scared when I found out that I needed it done. I have to tell you though that it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought. I truly feel better now than I have for months. I have a lot more healing yet but tomorrow will be 1 month for me. I just had my first x-Ray done since the surgery and will be taking it to my surgeon on Monday for my first follow-up appt.
I had been experiencing terrible sciatic pain in my left leg prior to my surgery. It had gotten to the point that I was unable to stand or walk on that leg at all.
Since my surgery I have not experienced any leg pain at all. Sometimes it aches a little at night but once I am up and walking it feels fine. I have some back pain from the surgery still but that's to be expected.
Hang in there. You'll do fine I'm sure. I hope the surgery gives you the relief you are looking for.

  • I had a spinal fusion at L4, L5 and S1 with disk decompression. It was not nearly as bad as I expected either. Still some nerve pain mostly at night but meds relieve it. Was having a lot of muscle tightness the first two months, but that has stopped. If you have a competent surgeon (IMHO, a Neurosurgeon) who is very experienced with your surgery and do what they say (I was stubborn), you will do okay.
