should i remove hardware? burst fracture, not fusion

hello everyone,

i am new to this website, basically 6 weeks ago i fell from a ladder and had a burst fracture to l2. i had pedicle screws put in at l1 and l3 to support it. the doctor told me that if it didnt cause me any problems the hardware would be left inside me.

i am going back to see the surgeon tomoro for my 6 week check up and wanted to check on here if any one had been in a simular situation and wether they had the hardware removed.

i know there is a lot of information on this site about people who have had fusion and the hardware basically isnt doing anything when its healed. but im thinking if the hardware is left in my back will it cause the discs betwen the repair to weaken, as they will not be getting worked as much as the rest. also could it cause the vertabrea above and below the pedicle screws to deteriate quicker?

i am only 27 and do a very active job so was worried about future problems. i know that my surgeon will give me sound advice tomorow but was just after a second opinion.

hope all that makes sense. thankyou

I have a few discs in my thoracic spine that are part of a long fusion... meaning they were left in but stabilized by removing other discs for fusion and hardware. Over time these discs "calcified" and are now consider "fused" as they no longer resemble a normal disc... at least this is how the surgeon explained it to me... I think it would be a good idea to discuss all of this with your surgeon. Best of luck to you.
