Ongoing arm/neck pain after visiting chiropractor...

Hello all,

I have a question relating to ongoing symptoms i've had for the last 4 weeks. I'll give you a little about my background. I'm a musician and have recently done an extensive 30 date tour in the UK which involved a lot of carrying heavy equipment and guitar cases around for sometimes a few miles around London/ various citys etc. I've always suffered from radial head issues in my right arm after an injury a few years ago so began seeing a local Musculoskeletal Therapist when the symptoms flared up. I visited her about 4-5 times and felt much relief from the symptoms in my right arm.

However after one particular treatment (the last one) the following day i began to get pain between my thumb and index finger on my LEFT hand (i'm left handed) it was a dull ache and it lasted a few days, naturally due to the increased workload with music I assumed it was just over use from lots of guitar playing and finger picking techniques but then following another show a few days later my entire left arm cramped up and generally felt tight and strained, pain mainly focused in the forearm, lower bicep and top of my hand (it was almost a cold tight sensation). I took 3 weeks off playing again assuming it was just a muscle strain and over use. I recontacted the therapist who suggested it is likely tense muscles and gave me some tips on how to loosen them as i had no money to visit her. This pain eased after 3 weeks rest but when i began playing again last week i felt a stinging sensation in the exact same place between thumb and forefinger. This developed into a burning sensation in the palm of the hand but with no other symptoms, no loss of grip and no cramping in the arm.

Since then, this has improved dramatically but i've spent the last 3 days with new symptoms, severe muscle cramps and tight muscles running from the top of my neck into my shoulder blade. mainly focused in the trapezius muscles. Again, it's being relieved by heat but what is concerning me is ALL of this in my left arm started happening after seeing this therapist (who isn't a back ally therapist).

I've visited the doctors who is sending me for an xray on the cervical spine tomorrow morning but i'm just seeking advice from you guys. I know its difficult to say what it is, but an insight would be great, could neck manipulation by a chiropractor cause a herniated cervical disc? she warned me of only strokes being a very small but potential side effect.

any advice/help would be wonderful.

Thank you in advance! :)

Yes, it is possible for chiropractic care to herniate a disc or cause a weakened disc to worsen. Xrays can only show alignment of the spine but not the condition of the discs since they are made of soft tissue and not of bone.
Before anyone undergoes chiropractic care, and always when you suspect that you may have a herniated disc or other damage to your spine, make sure that you are medically cleared and not at risk for further damage .
