natural fusion

Recent xray has revealed that my L4 and L5 vertebrae have fused. I had a partial disc-ectomy about 4 years ago and now have constant pain and morning stiffness. It is relieved by stretching and exercise and daily doses of Aleve, but I am concerned for the future. I still surf and am wondering how this condition may affect me in the future. Should I consider surgery to open the nerve paths through the vertebral opening (what is left of the opening)?

I will say that no one here can give you advice whether to have surgery and whether or not you should continue to surf. Those questions can only be answered by the medical professionals you consult. Also if possible try to get more than one opinion that way it will help you make your decision on which route you need to take.
Hope all works out for you and you are able to continue to surf.

I had a lumbar fusion of L4/5/S1 over the years I had these three bone spurs growing and getting bigger each year. About five years after the fusion my bone spurs met the next level and fused my L3 to L4. Surgeon says it's a perfect self fusion that the body did to protect the nerves at that level. I was told not to worry about it unless it causes any issues which would cause me pain. At that time they could do what they would have to do.
Maybe it saved me a surgery? If it doesn't bother you it shouldn't limit you.

    Good Luck

I've always said Ricki, "I'd rather be lucky than good."
Seems like luck runs with you too!
    Take care,
  • My l5 s1 fused recently & it took the pain with it. Took 7 long years & RX meds to stand it, but the result is worth it. The upper back muscle spasms are taking longer to stop, feels like a nasty habit they learned & don't want to give up easily! I thought for sure I'd have issues with stopping narcotic meds after so long, but they were actually what tipped me off something's changed! Began getting extreme nausea with regular doses, had to cut back drastically to prevent nausea & discovered --no pain.(It used to make me black out) I'm very thankful & babying myself now, at least for a while, don't want to "knock it apart."
DDD , bone on bone, causing scoliosis, on & on! Just great!
