Pain in Sacrum Area

I've had on and off issues with sharp stabbing pain in my sacrum area. I've also received more facet joint injections in the lumbar portion of my back but never in the sacrum area.

The pain I'm having feels like a sharp stabbing feeling when I walk (on both sides) and when sitting my outer thighs and scrotum ache.

Where I've had the injections, my back is feeling pretty good. It's just now my lower back is hurting all the time and sleeping is an issue. My Opana is also helping with pain in the lumbar area, but the pain in my lower sacrum area doesn't respond to the medication.

I'm beginning to wonder if I am having some SI joint issues or if I've just really pissed off the nerves in that area. Has anyone else out there had this type of pain before? I had my original fusion in 2007 L4-S1. I have an appointment with my PM tomorrow, so I hope I can get some answers then.

  • Have you tried a Si joint injection? That is one of the main ways they diagnose SI joint issues. Maybe you should discuss the possibility of getting an injection with your doc. I have had many. I have been diagnosed with SI joint dysfuction and I have a sharp stabbing pain in my pelvic area when I walk and lay down in the bed. Then pain sometimes extends down to my knee of my left leg. I was going to PT for the dysfunction, but I am having to take some time off from because of a spinal cord stimulator trial. I hope to continue PT after all SCS stuff is over with. I hope you find the answer to your pain and may 2014 bring you a good year of healing.

    Hi there,

My PM thinks it is sciatica. I have to say I've never had sciatica feel the way this sharp pain does. My last round of injections were at L5-S1. It didn't do much at all, so I may ask them to repeat them. If that doesn't help, I'm going to suggest the SI joint issue to see if they think it's possible.
