CrossFit after ACDF?

I'm brand-new to Spine-Health and just had a C6-C7 ACDF on December 16th. I'm a 27 yr old female athlete and this was my very1st surgery (first time going under as well, I was terrified!). Before surgery, I was an avid CrossFitter and I especially love olympic weighlifting. I have 2 more herniated discs that for the time-being do not require surgery. I know that I'll need to stay away from handstand pushups as to not make these other 2 bulges worse, but I'm going crazy not working out right now and am wondering if there is anyone else on this forum that has recovered fully and been able to get back to olympic weighlifting and CrossFit? What is the typical timeline like and what kind of movements/lifts can I ease back into?

Also, how long is it normal to be taking muscle relaxers and hydrocodone post-surgery? I'm wearing my soft collar about 50% of the time and am trying to build up my neck strength..but am still taking pills because of the intense stiffness/soreness between my shoulder blades. I'm going back to my Neurosurgeon tomorrow for my 1st follow-up since surgery and am hoping that he will remove the steri-strips!

  • I had a ALIF in June 2011 for L5-S1. It took quite some time to recover. I asked a similar question about kickboxing after surgery but my surgery was over two years ago and my fusion is solid now. So I guess we should both ask our respective surgeons. That's the person who would know best what you can do and when. I think my surgeon will be so glad to hear I am trying to lose weight finally that he will be all for it. But I'm still going to check in with him to get his opinion. I think avid athletes before surgery probably can go things sooner than non athletes. My sister was so distressed when she couldn't run. She broke her foot. But she had to forego the running for awhile. Good luck getting back into the swing of things. I hope you can get back into your workouts that you love!
