Epidural Steroid Injection HELP!

I wasn't sure whether to put this under the Lower Back Pain or Sciatica forum, so I'm posting in both. I have a herniated disc between L4 and L5. I was told it would take around 4 to 7 days to feel the results, however I'm worried that I won't feel any results since I see that's a quite often response on these forums. Basically, my question is: for those of you who did NOT receive any relief from the injection, did you feel the medication touching the nerve root that has been causing you so much pain during your injection? (this was quite painful) I did, and my doctor told me that was a good sign because that meant the medication was getting where it needed to be. So I guess I'm just wondering if everyone felt that, or if experiencing that means that I'm more likely to have better results from the injection.

I hope that makes sense!
Thank you so much!

  • With any of mine...I was sedated...
  • I had a nerve root injection for my L5/S1. It was a horrible experience I will God willing never have to go through again! I felt everything! as the fluid was being injected into the nerve root area I felt like electricity was pulsing through my butt and leg in a tree like way (I felt every nerve route in my leg! haha, I laugh now but it was horrible and didn't do me much good…..so much pain but not much gain =(
  • First one I felt just like you . Only lasted 5 days and not worth it. They told me the same thing that they told you. I have now found an anesthesiologist , pain medicine Dr. and I have had conscious sedation and feel no pain when injecting. I have received 3 since Nov, 22, Dec 11, and Dec 27th. I also had major spine surgery on neck in June so the L5/S1 had to wait for awhile. What area are you from?
  • I had a painful experience also, As the doctor was navigating the needle to the right location, I felt as if he was inadvertently stabbing me in the butt cheek repeatedly with an uncapped needle. It was just a crazy side nerve. Once he did locate the proper location and flooded my sciatic nerve with lidocaine and steroids I knew he was in the right spot but totally could not stop hot tears from forming in my eyes. I too, hope I'll never have to have that procedure done again. I did not get relief either.

I'm from the Charlotte, NC area. Did the other injections help you?
  • i felt the same exact extreme pain as you did, and my dr told me the same thing.. its a good sign that its getting to the right spot.
I did not feel any relief with any of my injections. I pray that you have different results!

This is one of the most frequently discussed topic on the forum.

I've included that in my Topic of the Week Topic of the Week Item #3

I have had a number (about 17) steroid spinal injections in the last 10 years.. I've had them for all the regions of my spine. Some, I have had good results from, others basically did not change or help anything. I've also had about 15 steroid injections into joints (shoulders and hips) over the past 5 years and had good results from only 3 of them. The others caused more problems.

The net, the Spinal injections helped or at least bought me some time to allow natural healing to take place. Joint injections, I've learned that they should ONLY be done using fluoroscope(xray) guidance.

One big impact all these steroids had...... I developed acute cataracts which required surgery. But that was good! I went from a 20/200 to a 20/20 one day after surgery. It became clear that the steroids created the cataracts. So that is one negative impacts steroids can have.

  • i to had the burning pain, about a week after i had some relief, im on my 3rd injection. they seem to be getting better the more ive taken, ive slowly started taking less of my nerve pain medication, so thats a plus, im only 26 and i really dont want to go through surgery. pray it heals on its own..
  • Had one today for L5, L4. Extreme pain! Lasted way longer than it should have. Thought I was going to jump off the table and kick someone! I think I bit a hole through the robe and had sweat dripping from my face when I finally was done and they let me up. So here I am 11 hours later and having very little pain. I had extreme weakness right after the shot and they had to wheel me to the car. I couldn't stand, kept tumbling to the left. I am also interested in seeing how much this helps. I posted my mri results on the pain forum and have ony a slight idea of what it means. I do not understand my options, or what kind of doctor I should see. Not very happy with current doc.
