In 2000 i had part of l5s1 disc taken away as I had severe sciatica.....now im suffering mild symptoms again but also lower back pain that feels like constant pressure n aching...had a CT which shows -

"evidence of disc degeneration at the lower 3 levels...with the most changes marked at l5s1...central disc protrusion which is indenting and displacing the thecal sac. There is narrowing of the lateral recesses, particularly on the right side..."

I dont have right side pain to note....am seeing specialist/neurosurgeon - next week and no doubt will be sent for an MRI.....anyone suffering similar PLEASE contact me as Im really getting depressed and am scared of this ending up as bad as it was before...constant pain and blacking out before the op.Im currently on LYRICA 75mg...which takes the edge off enough for me to function and work...but for how long??......please help!!

  • Hi! I have been where you are and know your frustration. My pain was damage was on my right side as well but I had left side pain. I have a five level fusion in my lower back three years ago and all is well. The MRI will show the damage better then the CT Scan does. I hope your surgeon is proactive is gets you fixed up soon. If you are not happy with him don't hesitate to get a second opinion. I'm on my third surgeon now and he is the best! On the 21st, I am going in for a five level, 360 fusion on my cervical spine. Please pm me if you'd liked more info.
  • Hi Bulgingdisc...I can also relate to your symptoms. I can't offer much advice as I am also in the process of finding the right treatment. I have herniations at L4/L5 and L 5/S1 with nerve root compression. Also have moderate to severe facet joint changes from L2 all the way down and left sided annular tears at the L2/L3 and L3/L4 discs..the tears don't seem to be troublesome since my pain is all lower lumbar and right sided ( where the nerve is compressed) . The sciatic pain has been under control since Nov 2011 with periodic epidural steroid injections. The facet changes have been giving me a lot of pain in the front of my right thigh, hip and groin. I had facet injections at 4 levels which helped quite a bit, yet only lasted 3 weeks. Lately the pain and pressure feeling in my lower back is really affecting my daily life..to the point that I resigned from my job of 8 years . I have had physical therapy, the steroid injections, anti inflammatories etc..the Dr I have been seeing is a neurologist, but I am planning on calling next week to ask for a referral to an actual spine specialist. I went to him when the first bout of sciatica came on 2 yrs ago because I was in such agony and could not function at all and he came highly recommended. I do like him, and he sends me for injections as soon as I feel the need..but I don't think he looks at the whole picture..only the nerve issues. The pressure, pain and stiffness are there constantly. So that's my story in a nutshell, I hope it helps to know you are not alone !
Good luck with your Dr and I hope you are on a path to finding relief soon!
  • I had an l5/s1 in July. It is a painful recovery. I am still on pain pills. I do not regret my surgeyr at all. My nerve pain down my legs into my toes was completely gone. I noe have problems with my l4. I do thunk if surgery is reccomended i will do it. I can't wait and suffer all year with this mess.

    Hello bulgingdisc,

We all know how depressing it can be to live with severe, chronic pain. Any one of us on this forum no doubt has suffered emotionally, one way or another, due to our back/neck issues. We all know that surgeon's will most likely operate to try and salvage our spines but that's all they do: cut. In order to be fully taking care of oneself, I truly believe one must find a good family doctor or counselor to recommend other ways to take care of oneself mentally. This can be antidepressants or it can be yoga. It could be PT or counseling with a psychologist, or acupuncture/massage.

I hope you can find a surgeon who will treat your back issues to the extent you need it. But I detect a sort of sadness and despair in your post, and so I'd recommend you find some way to take care of yourself emotionally, or learn to think positively. I truly believe that being positive can help you feel better, just as any operation would .... Hang in there
