I have been told that I need ADR surgery on my L3-4 and L4-5. Unfortunately my insurance denied the surgery and I am now looking at going to Dr. in Germany. Has anyone ever been treated overseas that could give me advice, tips, or travel information?

  • Before traveling overseas to undergo surgery, I would make sure to do tons of research, into the outcomes of adr in the lumbar spine and especially into the complication rates. The surgery for revision is life threatening, due to the major abdominal blood vessels in the area, and removal of the devices is only done by a select few surgeons.
While adr is offered in this country ( US) it is only offered at one level for a reason, and there are far too many cases of further accelerated deterioration of facet joints and other issues with adr in the lumbar spine but especially multiple levels ....make sure you do your homework and not necessarily with the facility involved......you want medical studies before going ahead with the procedure.
  • I went to Germany 10 years ago for an ADR at L5S1. I had heard of so many horror stories of fusion and adjacent disks going bad in the future which isn't supposed to happen with ADR. Well, fast forward 10 years and I just had a 3 level fusion on the adjacent disks anyway. Also, I think the recovery was about the same and I can already bend over and pick things off the floor after only 3 months. Also, the cost is about $40,000 now from what I've read. I say go for a fusion with the best doctor you can find. If you live in Florida, contact me for a great one.
Artificial disc at L5S1 for 10 years. Had 3 Level lumbar fusion and Laminectomy on Sept 27, 2013. It was an OLIF (Oblique Lumbar Interbody Fusion) with cages, BMP, rods & screws. Norco, Plaquenil
  • The discs above l5 were fine before surgery 10 years ago. I'm not sure if they would have degenerated anyway. Everyone in my family has bad spine issues so I guess it's hereditary.
