Hi. After 8 months of pain, mostly in my lower back, sometimes also in my mid back, I had a CT scan and a Schmorl's Node was found in my thoracic spine. The doc thinks that is what is causing all the pain as when he did a physical exam before I had the CT, the only tender spot was right where the node is.
The pain has been severe at times. It has really affected me mentally. I've felt very desperate to escape it at times and have considered suicide and buying heroin off the street as ways to escape it. I'm taking 60mg codeine/1g acetaminophen 4 times a day and it reduces the pain enough that I no longer feel so desperate, although my pain is still around 5 most of the time. I'm also in PT. I do a hydrotherapy strengthening routine a few times a week and some stretching/strengthening exercises at home a few times a day. I use a lot of heat treatment, a massage chair and heat rubs as well to relieve the pain. I'm also taking meloxicam (NSAID) and Cymbalta, which I was already taking prior to injury for bipolar depression.
Has anyone else had a Schmorl's node that causes a lot of pain? Reading about them on the web it seems most of the time they don't cause any pain or symptoms.
My doctors thinks with a few weeks of strengthening exercises I will be pain free. I am grateful to have such a good prognosis but I have trouble believing it for some reason. I feel like the level of pain I have now.. I could cope with if it really is a few weeks longer, but beyond that... I couldn't go on in this level of pain forever.
So, anyone had a symptomatic Schmorl's Node? What is your experience with it? Is my prognosis overly optimistic?
They are also known as intravertabral herniated disc or intraosseous disc herniation.
