  • My only experience with topomax has been for migraines and seizures. I didn't know they where prescribing it for back issues now.
Discectomies 05/08 and 04/11, fusions L4-5 Feb 9,2012 and L3-L4 June 28,2012, Staph infection washout 3/2/2012, Bulged L5-S1. SCS trial on January 17th, 2014, which was a success! Permanent SCS on February 20th.
  • is also used to treat neuropathic pain when it is prescribed for back or neck pain. It should be titrated up and down in dosage over a period of time, just as medications such as Lyrica, and gabapentin, cymbalta should.
Your pharmacy should have given you a print out of the information and precautions for the medication when you got the prescription filled, Do not take more of it than you are dosed per day, nor should you suddenly stop it without talking to your doctor first.
  • thanks for replying, have,nt got any yet,
just trying to find a good recommendation as i am actually on lyrica and cymbalta at the moment but is not making much of an impression at the moment.
  • Hi I was taken off gabapentin, after 4years due to my on going weight problem because it just kept going up and up. I been on Topamax for 18 months now and I have had no side effects . I lost 2 stone and it dose the same job as the gabapentin for the neuropathic pain .

may need to be made, when it comes to any medication used to treat pain.......Lyrica can be started as low as 25 mg but the maximum daily dose is 600 mg.....it needs to be slowly titrated up and down in dosage, and should never just be stopped without tapering off it. Cymbalta and gabapentin, as well as topamax are all in the same category , in that dosages need to be slowly increased and tapered off if a patient is going to stop taking them. Never just stop a medication without discussing it with your doctor first.
  • I have been on 75mg/day of topamax for about a year. I take it for migraines, I have had some SERIOUS back issues ( nerve and bone/disc related) the entire time I have been taking the topamax and it hasn't touched any of those issues. It is known to have very serious side effects. If you do indeed start taking it, be prepared to start drinking loads of water to avoid kidney stones :) if you have any questions let me know :)
