  • My friend is a medical specialist. She said to make sure you see an Anesthesiast as they are trained in pain management (PM). I have had several PM specialists who were hopeless, attended a very expensive pain management clinic which made my injury worse as I was misdiagnosed. They honestly didn't have a clue regarding spine pain or pain management.

My medical specialist friend was shocked that they would leave me in so much pain. She lives interstate so couldn't go to one she recommended. My PM's were orthos or neuros, one was a shrink who wanted to put me on largactil which is a psych medication. This is only my experience but I have been dealing with intractable pain for nearly 9 years now, and have researched the subject to death as I had to give up work.

So my next PM specialist will be properly trained in pain. I posted an article that vets have more training in pain management than most physicians. In the US it seems everyone uses a Physiatrists. There are only a few in Australia. You can check the MD rating site to see what patients say about their specialists. Have a look - choose one from your area, then call them to find out if they take your health insurance . Then I guess you need a referral from your GP. My GP has known me long enough so he lets me choose my own specialist now and writes a referral for who ever I choose.

With PM it's imperative you find someone who believes you and wants to help. I had an unusual injury and was misdiagnosed for 8 years.

I do not understand the American health system at all, but still would recommend you see an anesthesiast who advertises as a PM specialist.
