My Husband Needs Spinal Fusion Surgery - Help!

Hello, I am new to this forum. My husband needs the spinal fusion surgery. Let me tell you our story.
Three years ago my husband was diagnosed wih throat cancer. He was treated with chemo and radiation along with multiple hospital stays. Several months after that he ended up with a heart valve infection and was treated with IV drugs. The infection then gave him polymalagiarheumaticia. That is a whole body inflammation. One year of steriods. Not long after that he started with leg pain, we thoght it was from the neuropathy (chemo induced). The doctors decided it was a pinched nerve and it all stopped with that. About 6 months later he started having worse leg pain that slowly moved to lower back pain. We made an apoointment with thd Dr. he did a MRI and nerve test. The reults listed below.
Spinal Stenosis
Fractured Vertabrea
Degenarative Disc Disease
L1 disc pretty much gone
bulging disc.
Significant nerve damage

Do you think a fusion is the only sugery he will need?

  • are massive surgery and this will take it out of your husband he will be weak and need lots of hell post surgery . you didn't mention which fusion he requires is it ALIF or PLIF or even TLIF ?? ALIF if the big one {I had it 2 years ago} I was 6 weeks zombied on my recliner unable to do anything for myself .anything would defeat me 2 years on and I am am very limited regard what I can and can't do and I now require more surgery .please don't think that the fusion is being done for pain relief many people think that that's its main reason ..ITS NOT the reason is to stabilise the spine ..any pain relief is a bonus ..recovery is long and hard work and you may find that your husband requires pain medication for a very long time ..in my case it will be life long if you don't already have one a decent recliner would be a bonus for him as he will be able to sleep in it if he cant get comfy in bed I practically live in my recliner make sure you get a decent make I would tell you what make to look at but sh rules won't allow me to help you in that way .I am sure that if you go recliner shopping you will find a good one ..a rise and recline one good l.uck with the operation ..he will need you there after wards it t hard operation to get over expect recovery to be in years not weeks
    1997 laminectomy
    2007 repeat laminectomy and discectomy L4/L5
    2011 ALIF {L4/L5/S1}
    2012 ? bowel problems .still under investigation
    2014 bladder operation may 19th 2014
  • I read the doctors notes and this is what they are going to do.

    Bi Lateral Laminectomy
    PLIF and possible TLIF
