I've been reading the posts on here for a few months while I considered my options after dealing with extreme sciatic pain down my right leg. Thanks to many on here, I was comfortable making the decision to have a Microdiscectomy on my L5S1 are of my spine.
A Little history, I am a 42 yr old male in decent shape. I've had back issues for many years and have had several Sciatic Nerve flare ups down my right side the past 4 years. This last flare up, and why I decided to move forward on surgery, the pain did not subside for 3 weeks and an Oral Steriod Rx and a Steroidal injection did not help at all. So I finally pulled the trigger and had the surgery performed by a very highly recommended Neurosurgeon in my area who specializes in Spinal surgery.
Here is my question/issue:
I am one week post op of the surgery. I've taken it very easy since my surgery and have spent quite a bit of time lying in bed. I knew this was going to be toughest part because I am someone who can't sit still for long.and up until today, I've played by the rules. Without reprimanding me or telling me how "stupid" I was, I was hoping someone can shed some light on what could happen and how likely I did something that may be detrimental to my recovery. I am already upset I did this and instead of beating myself up and trying to figure it out on my own, I thought I'd join this site and get some feedback on personal experiences. So here it goes:
A couple of hours ago I was doing some slow walking in my backyard. I came across a 50ft garden hose laying in the yard and I wanted to get it into my shed for several reasons. So like a goofball I can be, I squated down using just my knees and lifted it straight up (like a simple squat exercise) and carried it about 15 yards. I did feel some tightening in my lower back and now I am laying here in bed (joining this site) with an ice pack on my lower back just in case I may have irritated it.
I know I could have done some damage, but my question is, is it likely? I know everyone is different when it comes to recovery, but wondering if I may have screwed things up in a big way.
Please let me know if this happened to you and should be "freaked out" right now. Thanks so much.
