I am a 28 yr old female who recently had SI Joint fusion on my left side due to degenerative sacroiliitis. I also have complete degeneration at the L5-S1 disc level and transitional anatomy at the lumbosacral region. During the surgery, my surgeon discovered i have an SI joint that is abnormally small for even a woman and had to adjust the usual placement of the 3 iFuse implants. This caused a slight fracture. He also had to do a secondary incision and do bone grafting in order to get my insurance (Tricare) to approve such a new procedure. I have had some numbness in my left foot post surgery which is mostly better after a round of prednisone.
I am curious as to other peoples experience with this surgery or other fusions concerning recovery. At what point does the pain level decrease and allow a return to normal? How long can I expect to need strong pain medications? I know that I am required to be only 10% weight bearing on my left leg for at least 6 weeks, but I'm wondering when I can expect not to "feel" the implants and bone pain so much when I move around. A week post surgery, I seem to be in less pain overall, but have more "bone" pain.
