Hi I am new to this group. I have been reading a lot, that’s for sure. I am really interested learning life after lumbar fusion including L/S joint. Additionally, I have seen many horse riders on this site so I hope to find some kindred spirits
I fell from my horse coming 27 years ago and had a L1 burst fracture. My spine was stabilized with a 5 level fusion and rods. I achieved my goal of riding again after 9 months and almost a year to my original accident I popped the rods loose which required more surgery and fusions. The rods popping were not related to riding.
I have been riding competitively most of my life and since given clearance from my doctor, most of this time was in my full body brace. It finally did not fit after 15years and I moved to a back belt. Fortunately, I have not had many issues or restrictions from my accident or surgeries.
This summer I started having pain and numbness in both legs primarily in one leg. X rays / MRI showed many changes disc degeneration, facet inflammation. So far I have had epidural shots which have been very successful. Saddle technology has changed and currently looking for a new supportive saddle. I have also obtained a corset with metal stays that seems to provide additional support while riding.
I am hoping to continue riding and doing my farm chores with the help of my pain doctor. I will continue to watch the site for LS fusion stories. I would love to know other riders stories.
