I'm new to this forum and would welcome some advice. I had an accident 6 years ago and fell on my left hip. I had serious lower coccyx back pain. This never really calmed down with lots of physio, rest and pain meds. A year later I had an MRI which showed advance disc degeneration for my age (33 at the time). I have had lower back pain each day with movement, but with completely changing my lifestyle, daily exercising with weights and interval training, healthy eating, hypnotherapy (positive mindet) I managed to bring the pain under control. I had sporadic episodes of extreme pain but I coped well. I had 6 different lots of physio and sports massages until they became too painful. I actually got really fit developing a great physique. About 3 years ago the pain got worse, I struggled, had to go onto daily medication and my exercise had to be reduced and long bouts of driving meant I sometimes struggled to get out the car and bed sometimes. I had to cut out some activities out of my life. About a year ago the pain was unbearable, I had to stop weights, couldn't drive for long distances, had to go on stronger meds. I'm now on 9 acupan a day, 8 co codamol and daily tramadol and still could not cope. I started to do yoga as the pain was changing my posture (which had always been excellent due to being in a competing and training majorette band for 11 years). I cannot stand at all without support, or walk for more than 10/15 minutes. Sleep is only possible in the fetus position, sitting is painful. I am 39 and begged for another MRI due to excruciating sciatica and saddle numbness. I have spondylosis in my lower spine, 2 herniated bulging discs at L5/L4 s1 nerve compression, annular tear and bulging into my spinal column, severe disc degeneration. Basically the 2 discs are completely dehydrated. It's an odd situation as my dad has the same conditions as myself.
I have gone private as this is now included in my job. The surgeon doesn't want to operate as I'm only 39 and wants me to have epidural cortisone injections to delay having surgery for a number of years. I have had 5 past stomach bleeds as I am allergic to oral anti inflammatory medicines and have refused to risk 3 lots of the 6 monthly injections. He has told me to go and think about it for 2 weeks. I cannot have anymore physio as it is too painful. I have a high pain threshold and have only seemed further assistance as my job and quality of life has been dramatically reduced due to not being able to walk far or be in a seated position unless I raise my legs on a long sofa/bed.
Should I risk the injections or push for surgery. I know everyone is different and I know there is no magic cure but for me my goal is to get the pain under control and be able to walk/sit carry on working, do simple exercise and enjoy the outdoors with my daughter and husband. I am interested in hearing your stories and offerings of advice of natural remedies..........
