New Here but Not New to Back Surgery & Pain!

I need to reach out for advice so I'm glad I found this site.

April 2012, was first surgery with hardware. L4/L5 collapsed and was on a nerve. November 2013 --- 2nd surgery to remove the hardware as a screw moved and was impinging on a nerve root; plus little bit fused had torn apart. December 2013, was the 3rd surgery which involved fusion of L4/L5 & hardware once again!

I have bursitis in both hips; although the left is worse (all my pain is left side prior & after surgeries); and my goodness the pain in my hips, back of thighs & calves is more than I can bear at times. Surgeon stated Friday the fusion changes our gait (way we walk) & way we hold our spine -- which in turn causes the muscles to" forget their place." Hence, the muscle spasms and pain. He stated eventually, they will get used to this new "position" and the pain will diminish; however, it may take quite a while ! ? ! This muscle issue is causing the bursitis - which on it's own is a beast to bear!

The more I move the more the bursitis hurts and the more pain in the hips and legs. Obviously, my muscles are weak due to 3 surgeries so close in time. The only way decrease pain is sitting and not do much (knitting is my new BFF!)

I just can't seem to make headway. I'm on one pain medication which does little. I have an appt with the Dr. on Thursday and wonder if anyone has any advice or suggestions regarding muscle relaxers / pain medications - - or - - has anyone dealt with anything similar? This evening I played with my grand-child and by 7pm I was ready to cry my legs throbbed so bad. It's 11pm now and feels like it's going to be a long night coping with the pain & throbbing.

I'll take any and all suggestions or idea's be it medications / exercises / anything to try and get my life back!

  • Hi.....just wondered if you've tried cortisone shots for your hip bursitis? I had hip bursitis on the right side a few years back and it actually went away after having 3 shots over a 2 year period. The shots didn't hurt and my GP did them in his office.

    Have you tried cortisone shots?
Synovial cyst removal in 2008. L4-L5 facet joint.
Lumbar fusion at L4-L5 in December 2013. TLIF posterior entry
  • I also have hip bursitis. Have you had cortisone injections in them? It was a miracle for me!
Artificial disc at L5S1 for 10 years. Had 3 Level lumbar fusion and Laminectomy on Sept 27, 2013. It was an OLIF (Oblique Lumbar Interbody Fusion) with cages, BMP, rods & screws. Norco, Plaquenil
  • I had steroid injections prior to the 1st surgery; and a few times between the 1st and 3rd surgeries. The Ortho-Surgeon didn't want to inject this past week due to steroids do something that cause the bone grafts not to fuse properly. Since I had a non-fusion once with other complications they don't want to risk it just yet. After my 3rd surgery, (the incision is from belly button down) I had an abdominal hematoma; an infection & my kidney tube on left blocked & caused my kidney to enlarge. I had a stent for 2 months; plus a wound-vac to heal the incision.

I just spent 4 hours ~ mainly sitting ~ at my grandson's class (he's 5) and I am in so much pain I don't know if I should cry or scream! Doing heat / ice - my medications. But nothing is providing relief. I'm holding fast that I return to the Dr. on Thursday.

The prior injections for the bursitis held temporary but because of the muscle/spine conditions they didn't last long.
