Terrible back pain and spasms following pregnancy

Hi all

I'm really struggling with back pain and spasms following the birth of my daughter. She is now 11 weeks old and the pain is getting much worse.

I have frequent back spasms which wipe me out for a day or two. I can walk at a snails pace and I can no longer lift the baby. It's really getting me down.

I have been prescribed Naproxen and Co-codamol but I am no better. Ice provides temporary relief. I am breast feeding so can't take more medication, but I am contemplating stopping feeding to get some diazapan.

I have been to Physio three times but it just seems to make it worse. She presses so hard and causes my back to spasm - the last session my back spasmed 5 times. I absolutely hate it and I find it impossible to get off the Physio bed without further spasms. I have also been to a chiropractor twice.

I feel I am in a viscous cycle, as spasms seem to set me back and so I am never taking steps forward.

Have any mums been through this and come out the other side? I am usually a very positive person but this is really getting to me.

Also, any others been through this and have got better?

  • I have no children, but I went to the dentist the other day and my hygienist was telling me about this exact problem. Since we both have back problems. Anyway, she ruptured a disc during the birth of her son. The doctor told her pushing the baby out is what caused it. She ended up having a micro-discectomy and she is doing much better. Maybe you could see if your doctor could order you a MRI, that is the best way to look at the discs and to check for nerve compression. Good luck and keep us posted.

Discectomies 05/08 and 04/11, fusions L4-5 Feb 9,2012 and L3-L4 June 28,2012, Staph infection washout 3/2/2012, Bulged L5-S1. SCS trial on January 17th, 2014, which was a success! Permanent SCS on February 20th.
  • Thanks so much for replying.

I went to the doctor today and she has referred me for a MRI. I'm glad she is taking it seriously and hopefully I'll get the scan soon.

She also told me to take diazapam but I need to talk to my health visitors first about how to stop breastfeeding.

    Will keep you posted!
