Never had a back issue but suspect I have a bulging/herniated disc. Advice greatly appreciated!

I have been an avid weight lifter for years. I feel I always used good form but do lift heavy and maybe it has caught up to me.

My back felt worn out so I took a week off and noticed a nagging soreness in between my shoulder blades.

Took another week off and the soreness went away but still felt a nagging discomfort in my back after 2 weeks off.

Finally after 3 weeks the discomfort seemed to have regressed to a point that I could train again. But I still notice it regularly.

Exercise doesn't seem to make it worse. But I read that leg presses are the worst exercise when having an injured disc. So I tried the exercise and yep, I felt an uncomfortable pressure right in my middle back. But other exercises don't bother it. Some even feel good on my back!

The pain is not severe. Some days I barely notice it at all. Other days it is a noticeable, nagging and annoying discomfort. Pain goes between 0-3 out of 10. On bad days 4 out of 10. So not bad.

Should I get this checked out? Or should I take another month off of training to see if it will heal? I love training so it is hard for me to take time off. But I don't want this to get worse.


  • Besides laying off? Did you ice? Did you use heat? Hydrotherapy? Anti inflammatory? If you have never had problems before you may find good results by doing some of these remedies and repairing whatever you did and avoid going to doctor.
  • Thank you! I really appreciate the tips. I haven't tried any of these. I figured if it wouldn't heal on it's own and it's a disc issue none of that stuff is going to fix it. But I'm getting worried now and willing to try whatever.
