I am scheduled to have a Coflex device implanted in conjunction with decompression at the L4-5 joint. I would like to read about others who have had this device implanted and their experience post surgery.
Some background about my situation.
Until Dec 2012 I was generally pretty healthy and fairly active (hiking10+ miles in a day, riding a bike 35 miles in a day, dancing for hours several times a week, a little XC sking.). However a year ago I began having severe pain and last March needed a steroid injection. I followed that with Physical Therapy and recovered somewhat returning to my usual activity on a reduced scale. However, I had an extremely painful episode in Jan. I had a second steroid injection in Jan and the pain stopped but I now have constant numbness/weakness in my right leg. I can walk and even dance a little but it is limited in comparison to my usual level of activity. I also sometimes feel that my right leg will give out. My right leg muscles have atrophied significantly. My Dr says there is pressure on the L4 nerve from debris released from a slightly damaged L4-5 disc. The Dr also sees facet joint damage that periodically becomes irritated/inflammed and causes the episodes of pain. The Dr recommends decompression and a Coflex implant to prevent further damage to the disc and make up for the facet joint damage.
