Magnesium and muscle spasms

For the past couple of days I have had the worst muscle spasms I have had in a long time. I have to lie flat with heat. I take a multivite and magnesium every day. As well as pain meds I also take muscle relaxants.

I ran out of magnesium about a week ago and kept forgetting to buy some. I finally got some yesterday and realised that the muscle spasms were probably being controlled to a certain extent by the Magnesium, as they really started after I ran out. The spasms were so bad I would have to lie flat wherever I was.

Has anyone else found this? I just wondered. The muscle relaxants did't seem to be working at all without magnesium.

I don't know about a relationship between the muscle relaxants & the magnesium. I've run out of magnesium in the past & like you felt a significant increase in pain.

Actually this does make since as magnesium is an electrolyte and if your electrolytes are low you can experience muscle pain.

I had severe (more so than usual) muscle pain and spasms and other symptoms (not pain related) and my primary care physician ran some blood work and found out that all my electrolytes were extremely low.

So yes, it seems entirely possible that there is a relationship.

  • Magnesium has also just about cured my constipation issues.

I do magnesium think it makes a difference to my pain. A small one, but any improvement is welcome.
  • I have went to chiro's for many years and the new one that i go to had recommended me take CAL/MAG and after taking it for awhile i did benefit from it. Of course you forget and take it a few days and then something like cramps in the calves during the middle of the night will really remind you to take it. It has helped me, i can tell you that!
