spinal fusion and sciatica

Had fusion of L4/L5 in early Nov. All went well except developed mild infection at one of the 2 incisions after about 3 weeks. After no progress with infection over 3 week period, wound was reopened and cleaned out. Delayed commencement of PT by about 1 month. Was feeling pretty good and able to walk 9 holes of golf, not play, with no pain. Started PT in mid January and seemed to develop severe sciatic pain in left buttock down left leg. Heretofore pain was on right side with drop right foot. Pain from sciatica is far more acute that any discomfort prior to surgery. Am back having epidurals. If they don't work surgeon says may have to fuse L5/S1.
So far the surgery hasn't been a problem, the recovery is far worse in terms of pain and activity. Any comments by those who have had same issues. Also have numbness in both feet, but it comes and goes. The process whereby I'm asked to rate level of pain on 1-10 is meaningless. One minute I can have virtually no pain, next it is 8-9 and I can't walk 10 yards or stand for more than 30 seconds.
