does the hole in your disc heal over after surgery?

I've read various places that since spinal discs don't have a blood supply, they don't regenerate the way normal tissue does after surgery. This suggests that after a herniation is removed via microdiscectomy, the 'hole' in the disk remains open, which I can't understand. If that's true, how does the stuff inside the disc not just continue to come out? Sorry if this is a stupid question, it's just something I can't find an answer to anywhere. Thanks -- 11C

  • i think the heat from the laser catarizes the wound. i had mine done the old fashioned way through a fusion and removal of the disc and metal and bone graphs put in
I have 4 fusions from L5-3, the latest last May '12 where they fixed my disc that broke. They went through my side this time. I take 40 mg of oxycontin 4x a day and 4 fenatyl lollipops 300 micro gms 4x a day.
  • twenty years ago I had a ruptured disk (C6-C7). I only had neck and shoulder pain and no arm pain. After two months it healed and my doctor told me it calcifies at the tear area and it may cause problem in long term. I did not have any problem for twenty years until two years ago. And to my surprise the problem is C5-C6 and the C6-C7 is not in great shape but is not giving me any trouble.
  • I had a therapist tell me it's like a tire. It will heal but it's not as strong - like patching a tire.
    It can rupture again easily.
