Leg continuing to give out after lumbar discetomy

I had surgery a week ago for a herniated disc and pinched nerve. Before surgery, I had fallen a few times when my leg with the pinched nerve would just give out on me. I have been walking as recommended by the surgeon but am afraid of falling again. It happened when walking with my husband tonight but I was holding on to his arm so I didn't fall. I still have pain in my leg and numbness which I know will take awhile to go away. Is the same kind of thing? Is it okay to use a cane when walking to steady myself?
