My father who is 73 years old had a surgery this march for herniated disc in L4/L5 region. Surgeon who performed the surgery has done a full discectomy and didn't perform a spinal fusion as part of it. My father is now suffering excruciating pain two weeks after the surgery and the doctor/surgeon is telling us that it is because of instability.
Is it normal to perform a complete disc removal without fusion ?
Will he heal naturally as surgeon says given that he is over 70 years old ?
How the healing happens if fusion is not performed ? Will the bones naturally fuse or fibrous tissues that will grow that will give him more stability ?
has anyone who had this type of procedure tell us about the recovery process ?
Thank you very much for the help.
