I am 20 years old and was just today diagnosed with a large L5-S1 posterior herniated disk, read from an MRI. The injury began exactly 3 weeks ago from a heavy squatting injury. I have done 3 weeks of physical therapy and that has done nothing for me. I am having no back pain and sciatica that starts mid hamstring and goes to the knee and a slightly numb calf and foot. Now let me give you a pretty normal day... Wake up in the morning with a stiff back and slight sciatica. Next I get in my car and head to work, and sitting down to drive to work is the most excruciating pain I have ever experienced. After getting to work after an hour or so I loosen up and barely have any sciatica, just a funny walk because I can't drop my heel first. Progress through the day with only minor flares of sciatica depending on how I bend. On the drive home barely any sciatica, just a bit numb. Next come home go for a walk, watch TV, etc. Now that has been the typical day of a 20 year old man that obviously has nothing better to do than be held back by a bad back already. I also don't understand how the pain comes and goes, the MRI said a LARGE herniated disk. why can some days it be severe and then some days not so much.
Talked to the doctor recently and said to make an appointment with a neurosurgeon in the next week, and said to not bother with physical therapy any more. I am a little hesitant about making an appointment with a neurosurgeon because all he can do is surgery or epidural (Right?) So I guess what I am asking here is what your opinion of my next steps should be.
By the way, I am still lifting weights just ones approved by the PT and doctor and nothing that aggravates my sciatica or back. I want to be able to run again. Prior injury I was doing 3-4 miles a day.
Chiropractor (Heard people have good success with inversion therapy)?
more physical therapy?
All of the above??
Sorry folks, I am a young 20 year old bull with grandiose plans this summer including many hours of plane rides, mountains, roadtrips, and many more adventures.
My biggest trip starts in 2 months, think I will be able to sit on a plane for 11 hours???
If this post makes an sense at all I would appreciate any and all advice.
Thanks people, I truly hope all of you heal as well.
