Hi, my first post. I had herniations at L5-S1 (left) and L4-L5 (right). Tried 3 months of non-surgical options and laid semi-reclined and limited my mobility and lifting. Instead of improvement it only led to increasing pain & more limited mobility.
Was taking Percocet for 4 wks but wasn't effective, so given 2mgs of Dilaudid 4x a day for 2 months but wasn't effective in pain relief. Had crushed nerve root causing severe left sided sciatica, sharp stabbing pain on backside from hip to knee, cramping calf and numb foot. Couldn't sit or stand for more than 20 minutes before became unbearable. On right there was increasing sharp stabbing low back pain and foot pain.
So had multi-level disc excision done 10 days ago. Muscles were not cut, only retracted. Once inside the herniations had grown and were far worse than Feb. MRI had shown. Right L4-L5 nerve root was also crushed. Surgeon said all of herniation on both levels were excised.
Awoke from recovery in more severe pain, no relief. Left sided pain now mirrored on right side. On 8 mgs of Dilaudid 4x a day and still in pain. Released from hospital after 3 days and last 7 days have seen very little improvement. Anyone else experience worse leg and back pain after? Still needing high pain meds? Only minor improvement after 10 days?
Mostly bed-bound but getting up walking around house several times a day. Last 2 days been able to walk with limited need for walker. Doing foot flexes several times a day. I'm wondering if my pain and situation is normal for nerves crushed 2-3 months?
Success was expected, but feels like surgery failed and I'm scared nerves are so damaged I will always be in pain. Any advice or similar situation?
Thanks in advance.
