What to expect after surgery

Hi folks. I'm hoping someone has had this surgery and can give me a heads-up on what to expect. After several years of pain
and 2 MRI's scattered a year apart. It was decided the only way I could get rid of A: the pain B: The limited movement and C: the odd burning/ electrocution sensation that would start near my jaw, go down my shoulder and into my upper back would be to have c3,c4,c5 ACDF. After they opened me up, the NS found that there was no disc in c4 and c5. It was gone and my spine had replaced it with cartilage and calcium. Today is June 9 2014 and I had the surgery last Thursday. My questions revolve around the pain of the sore throat, but also the phlegm that continually gets stuck in my throat. I have to clear my throat several times to get it to even move As much as I love Ice cream (and it feels good going down) I understand I need to lay off dairy products. It does make it difficult to sleep. I'll need to wear this collar for 6-12 weeks with no driving I'm sure most of you are like me, hating to rely on other people to get you around. Thanks in advance for any input you may have for this 60YR male
