Need Advice for Drs Visit

I will be attending the hospital with my mother in law tomorrow and need a bit of advice. She has been attending a dr since a car accident in 2009. So far she has been diagnosed with degenerative disc disorder as well as stenosis. She has had 2 operations one was a discectomy and fusion of C4/5 and the other was a lumbar decompression on L4/5. Since the decompression she has not been able to weight bear on her right leg and has been told that the next step is to put a rod and screws in her back - is that really the only other option. She has also had 3 steroid injections to the site which have had no impact or given her relief. She basically is on crutches since Nov and seems to be in a lot of pain. Can anyone advise me on what I should be asking the dr or if there are other treatments that she should ask him to investigate?

Any help would be appreciate at this juncture as I am very concerned with her going for a rod in her back as then she would be almost immobile.
