After having been diagnosed with Spinal Stenosis in Oct. 2013 as well as having 3 herniated discs on top of each other, L3/L4/L5, I was recommended to have and had an Laminectomy done on 4/29/14. At that time I was told to walk as much as possible without hurting myself as part of my recovery, no sitting/standing/laying down for over 1 hour, etc. I started walking about a week after my surgery, with only pain being my incision. This lasted for 3 weeks. For the last 3 weeks, I have had severe lower back pain on my incision (it's not re-opened or leaking) and pain & swelling on both sides of my incision. I went back to my Orthopedist, who NOW advised me that the 2 sets of muscles underneath the skin where I as cut will take 3 months to heal, and that the final layer of muscles that were cut will take 6 months, and advised I will not be anywhere close to 100% again until possibly Halloween 2014. Now they have scaled back my walking, and also my sitting/standing/laying down restrictions to 1/2 hour at a time. And basically told me that I will have to deal with swelling and pain for next 6 months, so I better get used to it. Has anyone else been told this or experienced something similar to this? And what are suggestions for pain management, other than anti-inflammatories for swelling along with ice packs?
