recently diagnosed help

I just got my xray results back and was diagnosed with degenerative disc disease and also something called endplate irregularity. My back pain has been constant and fairly severe for the last 7-8 years. I'm only 26 and the only info my Dr. Has given me so far is that the problem has progressed significantly for my age. I realize everyone is different but I was hoping you guys could give me some info on the next steps. I've already consulted the spine specialist but what treatment will they usually try first. I've already been on an anti inflammatory "meloxicam I believe" and have seen no relief. Any help would be great!
