When to go for surgery?

Hello all,

First let me say what a fantastic forum this is I'm so glad I found it, such a wealth of experience here!

I'm a 31 y/o selfemployed auto mechanic and two month ago I hurt my back lifting way too heavy wooden logs, I didn't think too much of it and kept bending and lifting for two more weeks before I realized that it isn't normal to take 30 minutes to get dressed in the morning due to back/leg/butt pain. So I go to the doc and he sends me to get a CT and tells me that I have a large herniated disc l4 l5 and prescribes me some painkillers. He told me that in about 80% of caces it heals by itself but if I have loss of strength or feeling in my leg or foot or in case the pain becomes unbearable they can operate. My question is this, is there a deadline for surgery? I mean can it hurt to wait longer? I felt improvement after the first 3 weeks but not after that anymore, in fact this last week has been horrible I can't even lie in bed anymore. My biggest concern is long term, I want to keep my business.

I know this question has been asked before and every case is unique but I would just like to hear what more experienced members would do, with the hindsight they now have.

Thanks in advance
