2 weeks post alif

Hi, I as two weeks post alif for l4-s1 fusion.. Had staples removed yesterday and now about 2 1/2 inches of my incision have re opened.. Went to ER this morning and they won't close it, instead have to do wet to dry dressing twice a day. However, my concern is infection, they did not give me antibiotics because there is currently no infection, but I am terrified of getting one. They also told me there is a possibility the rest of the incision could continue to open like a zipper. Anyone have any suggestions or advice?

  • and make an appointment to see them as soon as possible.
  • you must get hold of the consultant if the wound has opened up the last thing you want is osteomyelitis or any infections lets hope the rest of the work is better than the outside bit ! .when I had my ALIF I did not have any visible stitches I don't know how he did it but I was stitched from ;;within ;; and even though I have a 8 inch scar its neat wishing you good luck

  • I spoke to my surgeon's office and they also told me to do the wet to dry dressings and I have a follow up appointment with him on Tuesday afternoon for a wound check. In the meantime, I am going to have to call again this morning because now the top part of my incision right at my belly button has come apart as well. I'm afraid to move for fear of the rest of it just opening up. They offered to write the order for home health and I initially declined but think after this new section opening I am going to take them up on that. It really grosses me out to have to pack that open wound every day :(
  • Hi Jen. How is the incision? I had my ALIF surgery 7 weeks ago, my surgeon used a dissolving stitches. I was afraid that my incision would open up after the dressing was removed, I asked if I could do anything to prevent it from happening. I was told to wear a compression belt and I did religiously till now. Hope your incision heal up soon.

  • I spoke with the surgeon's office again this morning and now they are sending me back to the vascular surgeon who did the approach and close - they want to try a wound vac? So on Thursday I go see him, then to the neurosurgeon, then to get my bone growth stimulator then I can come back home. I'm just happy that I can do all of this on one day since I live 3 hours from all of my appointments. I'm still really sore and the incision hurts, but I think I feel better than I did on Friday since I slept almost 24 hours on Saturday. Thanks for checking on me :)
  • Hi Jen. How is your incision healing.? closed?. I am on my 10th weeks post surgery and I don't have pain at all. If I could do one thing different, it would be to apply Vitamin E lotion or argan oil on the scar sooner. Don't forget to wear compression belt, it will help flatten your tummy. Be well and speedy healing.
