Im 34 years old, male and have had back problems for about 7 years now. It all started back in 2008 when I hurt my back for the first time. I was ripping up a subfloor in our house when I felt a little tweek in my back, the next day I couldnt make it to the bathroom. My parents recommend I go to a chiropractor like they do when they pull out their back so after about an hour of struggling to get into the car with my wife's help we made it. my chiropractor didn't recommend seeing a doctor or any diagnosis and just said that it probably wasnt a disc issue that she could tell and just did the adjustment. It did help and the pain went away after about a week so I took her word for it and didnt follow up with my MD, After that I had more problems for the next 4 years but the chiropractor fixed it and I went on more worried about not missing work and being young and stupid so I didnt think about seeing a doctor.
During this time I had a son and life was good until I got layed off which sucked but It seemed like I could get a job no problem until I was picking up my sons toys one day and pop goes my back. I figured ill go see my chiropractor and all will be well but it didnt work and now I have this weird leg pain so I go see my doctor who gives me pain meds and muscle relaxants and tells me to see a physiotherapist, which I do but it just keeps getting worse and I stop seeing the physiotherapist and just give it a rest which helps and eventually the back pain slows but the leg pain persists and I decide to see a different physiotherapist who is convinced its an SI joint problem and has me doing all sorts of exercises that are excruciating and cause my back to flare up again which leaves me bed ridden for a week. I go back to my doctor and have to beg him to sign a req for an MRI but be does and I get one done in august of last year. It shows 3 herniated discs (L3-L4, L4-L5, L5-S1). with the L4-L5 being severely herniated and completely effaces The subarachnoid space with severe narrowing of the right L5-S1 lateral recess. After hetting the results my doctor set up an appointment with a spinal specialist who told me that no surgeon would do surgery on my because I didnt have bad enough siatic pain and refused to get me a consult appointment with their spinal sergeon which I was okay with since I really didnt want surgury and told me to restart pysio so i booked an appointment with yet another physiotherapist for the following week but the weird part is that about a week later without doing anything and just waiting to restart pysio the leg pain got better and eventually vanished, I still had some minor back pain but that was manageable and over the next month it went away and I was able to go back to regular life and full time work with only the odd minor flare up that felt more like muscle fatige than anything until around december.
In december my wifes and i decided to go and visit her side of the family for christmas and all was great except that one morning after sleeping in a not so comfortable bed i woke up with a sore back that wasnt too bad but was a bit alarming since we were pretty far from home, the next day it was worse the following day even worse so i had to convince my wife to leave early and head home, everyone knew about my back problems so it wasnt a big deal but it still was embarrassing to have cut a trip short because of it but it turned out to be a good decision because I couldn't get out of bed for the next 5 days. I went back to the spinal specialist and he told me the same thing as before, go to physio, take anti - inflammatories and come back if anything changes, well since then I have had 3 more major blowouts as I call them which leave me bed ridden for upwards of a week one of which was so bad my wife had to call an ambulance and required 3 shots of morphine to calm down. Ive had a ct scan done but that only shows minor inflammation in the joints so im not a candidate for injections, ive been to chiropractors, massage therapists, physiotherapy, acupuncture, tryed an inversion table, went through a treatment of traction and seen multiple doctors that all tell me that surgery doesnt work and to continue with conservative measures but all of them either make it worse or at best offer very temporary help. I am now in constant pain and cant handle sitting in a chair for more than 1/2 an hour or stand for over an hour, if I can walk around it helps and laying down for too long makes it sieze up, im constantly applying ice and heat just to manage the small amount of normal life I get, I never get to play with my son or do the smallest father responsibilities I should be doing and he doesn't understand fully why which is the worst part. My wife has to do all the house work. To boot all the anti - inflammatories I have taken are giving me stomach and bowel issues. The good part is I dont have the leg pain but thats not much. Im at a point of wits end and dont know what to do. If anyone has any advice or anthing that might help I would be greatful.
P.s sorry for the novel.
