"Its in your head" comments

I've had a number of surgeries (6) on my spine, predominately fusions and re-do's.

How many of you guys get the "pain is psychological" crap that PM doctors try to spin?

I've got a neurosurgeon telling me one thing and the PM dude saying something about mind control and being able to levitate and shoo pain away?

More titanium steel in me than a modern car.....

  • THat happened to me at first but I a;sp see a psychologist along with my pain clinic doctor. For me that made a big difference but I also find that it can be helpful to keep a pain journal, for me I write quotes that I find that explains my pain but even just writing about your day works. The last thing I would do is be an advocate for yourself and say that isn't going to work or my easy way out of it, I've already tried and it didn't help haha!
Hope you start being able to deal with your pain and not your head!
  • Yes. I've had one doctor tell me this. The doctor who gave me four steroid injections (L4/L5) in a matter of four months. I kept telling him that the pain wasn't going away and he kept telling me that it's in my head. His statement didn't really sit well with me but luckily that was the only time I've had that happen. My PM doctor is very receptive and helpful and listens. Now, with that being said I had a bit of a battle wondering if my pain was sometimes created by my body to get pain meds or if the pain was genuine. Over time I've learned to tell the difference but it really scared me for quite a while.
  • I am sure the pain that you are experiencing is NOT IN YOUR HEAD .and is very real there are certain members in the medical world and in general public that won't acknowledge chronic pain I have met with members of the medical world that hold the view that chronic pain does not exist they tend to be very arrogant high flyers with excellent surgical skills but with a dreadful bedside manor .the only way to deal with such individuals it to dispense with their services and find someone with a sympathetic ear chronic pain is a very complex issue and need to be managed accordingly with positive support and the relative medication .if I were you I would find someone who fits with this criteria .you must not feel guilty about having a condition that .to the untrained eye is essentially absent ie pain can not be seen a good pain specialist will listen to you and support you .there are many out there that will help you don't give up
  • Many thanks for the replies.

The Dalai Lama is coming to Australia this year.

I might be able to get a private audience with him and see if I can get a copy of the map to Shangri-La and the book on 10 east steps to shoo pain away.

The only sympathetic doctors are those that are elderly, have literally thousands of hours of experience, aren't interested in exotic cars and exotic holiday locations (I was recently in an appointment where the dude talked more about going to Bora Bora than my spine).

What a world we live in now - profit before people.
