My 16 - year -old son was just diagnosed with Scheuermann's disease in the thorasic area based on an X-ray and location of his pain. He is in the middle of his growth spurt and apparently the growth plates on the vertebrae facing the outside of his back are growing faster than the the growth plates facing the inside which leads to the inside vertebrae being wedged together and his back curving in a hunch. He is no longer able to play tennis (he was on the high school team) or do most normal exercise. Reading on the internet just now I've seen a brace mentioned for Scheurmann's disease but his doctor didn't mention this. He ordered an MRI and after that we will see what he inteneds to do. However, this doctor is a D.O. sports medicine doctor and I wonder if I should take my son to an orthopedic instead. I don't want him to have a permanent deformity so I am interested in the brace. Does anyone else have a teen with this condition or had it when they were a teen? What treatment was given or is being given?
