Hi everyone, I just signed up and would like to share my story. I'm an 18 year old 6'1" 220lb linebacker who is currently a postgraduate at an elite prep school in New England. The football season is coming up and I am being recruited by numerous division 1 schools, nevertheless this season is the most important year of my career thus far. I felt discomfort lifting weights so I decided to go to the orthopedic, it was not fun.... My lower back hurt, my calf was very tight and the left side of my left foot was and still is numb. I got an MRI which revealed a small disc bulge at L4-L5 and a moderate to large disc herniation at L5-S1. I was then sent to the spine specialist scared out of my mind not knowing a whole lot. I got to the spine specialist just a couple days ago and he was understanding of my situation, this year will determine the next 40 years of my life, whatever I need to do I basically have to play... I was given a scholarship to play at prep school and I'm moving In in a couple of
weeks. The spine specialist told me about the herniation and why it's causing my pain, I'm scheduled to get an epidural steroid injection on Friday, I then have about a month until my first game. My pain is bad but tolerable, my back is a dull pain, half my foot is numb and my calf and hamstring are tight. I'm hoping this injection will help, regardless I'm going to have to deal with this there's no way around it. Can anyone offer any advice? Maybe any experiences with the injection and how you felt after? The doctor was confident a transforaminal injection would do the job. I'm supposed to be feeling better in no time. The pain I'm having right now is tolerable, but it sure wouldn't be an enjoyable game to say the least. Any and all advice is awesome.
Thanks guys! I honestly can't wait to have it done - John
