Hi. My name is Jim and I am 66 y/o with degenerative disk disease, L4-L5-S1 with sciatic pain down r leg and lower back pain. Was diagnosed in 2009 and it has slowly worsened. I just had Medtronic Spinal Cord Simulator and it did result in a significant reduction in pain (approx 50-60% less).
I am waiting for final approval from the VA (yes-the VA and I have gotten good care (all things considered) and hoping for implantation soon.
I have a part time job and need to work for the $ and I am hoping to return to work (no heavy lifting, etc) as soon as I safely can. The Medtronic rep (a BSN RN that was FANTASTIC) said that it might take from 4-8 weeks to settle in and I don't necessarily go back to soon, However it is a new position teaching at community college and I am concerned about the recovery time....
Can anyone share their experiences after the surgery and how long it took you to recover. My pain specialist/surgeon hasn't told me yet what the suggested recovery time will be. My MD wants to implant the device in my lower back near the SI joint and use 2 leads wires w 8 leads each.
I spoke with a Medtronic Ambassador had a paddle put into his abdomen but my surgeon doesn't "install" it there.
On a funny note, during the trial I had a strange feeling that I will be part Bionic Wired Human with the quality of my life (and less pain) dependent on a battery-operated-internal Gizmo.... Strange idea, but it felt like the devices is going to become my little friend....
Tell me the truth (with a slant towards a shorten completely pain free recovery)... HaHa. Gott-To-Laugh.....
