Hello glad I found you guys.

Hello to all. Just wanted to get started on the forum. I participate on several forums and this is the most complex. I am mainly wanting to find out about pain management and my options for surgery. I have made attempts to find my way and have just had a major pain management crash. I could not believe a doctor bill could get so high and believe I have been took to the cleaner. I do respect forum rules, but need to find out if owing $1300 for a first visit lab work up is common? The doctor has billed three lab codes then I get an eob from the lab with a whole sheet of line items. The DR office told me a different story when I was signing in. This is my second round with pain management and went with a different DR and sure am regretting it.

Second I really fell I just need to go to surgery, but can not come to grips with all this. I suffer from neck degeneration for 20 years and do not think pills are going to be a total answer. I was told by a PA during a visit to one of two local neck specialist that my arm pain would get fixed, but my neck pain being fixed was 50/50. Not what I wanted to here.

I ahve looked at my MRI and as my PA said it is ugly. I have seen two other surgeons that did not want to touch it said surgery was not needed yet I can not get out of bed and fuction in the morning. The last DR visit said from the report of numbness in my arm I would now be a canadaate for surgery.

So first line of business is this PM bill ligit. Can not believe I owe $1300 for labs.

  • But it may help to know where you live. Welcome and I hope you're feeling better soon.

I am assuming that the lab work was for compliance testing- urine testing for the medications you are being prescribed? If the lab used was one of the large labs commonly used in pain management, they use gas chromotography/mass spectrometry testing to check levels of medications, metabolites, reference ranges for your last dosage, as well as for various street drugs.
Their bill is high, however patients are supposed to be told that whatever their insurance does not pay, the patient is not responsible for the balance. If you call the company or let your doctor know that you can not pay the balance, they are supposed to let the company know and the remainder of the bill is supposed to be wiped clean.

Yes this is exactly the case. I was not informed of anything and received a separate EOB from the lab. I am living in Tennessee and it seems we have the highest abuse in the country. I hope I can get the bill wiped and move on to a recommend provider. I went with this one because they lead me to believe they were the lowest cost provider. I should have went with my wisdom. When I went to get my paper work for new patient I was disturbed be some things.

I am moving on to a more recommended provider, talked to them today.

So is it the law that the lab wipe the bill? I can not see $xxxx for lab work.
  • however I sent you a pm message. If it is the lab that I pm'd you about, simply call the lab and explain that you can not afford the remaining balance, and it should be wiped off your costs. If it not that particular lab, you may need to contact the lab and discuss the situation. Sometimes, if the proper codes are not used for billing purposes, them submitting the proper coding changes what the insurance will pay.

I called the insurance and they told me I could not get the codes from the insurance, but would have to contact lab due to HIPA. I see in the back of the EOB there are ways to get the codes.

That is a great link to a well written post. I am certainly a poster child of that post. I have seen two acupuncturist that can get rid of the pain for sometimes as many as three weeks, but I have moved away from one and the other moved away from me. So as I write this and my shoulder feels it just had a tooth filled (numb) surgery looks like my only option unless I turn into a supper motivated person. I truly believe I could work my way through for a few more years, but I am not doing well now and just need to find faith in the two neck specialist my chiropractor recommend that are in town. I am ready to go to another town, you know how we get thinking the scalpel is better in a more prominent named hospital. i would certainly fell good about the guy that worked on P manning I would like to find a team because my problems seem to be going down. I am having problems all the way down to T12 now, mostly T3-4 and T8. The main problem is C 3-6. things are coming inline where I could go out for surgery in 2015.

when i get my next MRI I need to look at the thorax. I have been told a MRI may not be best for that area?

I can not believe how bad I fell now. I think the humidity is getting me the pain is turning around my elbow as I type. i did mow today and plan on falling some trees tomorrow which is what I done last Saturday. Well enough for this post as i am rambling at this point. I will end by saying i lone for the days the chiropractor could get my back to move.

I will add I had whip lash at a young age and also have poor neck structure, it is straight as an arrow, this has also been identified in my son. I replied to PM.
